1. ARSENIC & CADMIMUM KILLS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE – “W.H.O. AND UNIVERSIRY OF ABERDEEN IN SCOTLAND”
W.H.O.report titled “Investigation and evaluation of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) of unknown Etiology in Sri Lanka” and University of Aberdeen published a report titled “Variation in Rice Cadmium Related to Human Exposure” conform the fact that at least 2 persons die daily due to kidney failure, while over 200,000 patients suffer from CKD and thousands more at risk due to heavy usage of Agro chemicals.
Organic farming will save lives of people
2. RECENT PAST FERTILIZER SHORTAGE AND ITS IMPACT ON HARVEST & SAVING OF FOREIGN EXCHANGE
There was a shortage of Urea , TSP & MOP and it had an adverse effect on the harvest since farmers used to apply only inorganic fertilizer and they were not prepared to apply organic fertilizer which need 3 -4 months of preparation.
The government spend Rs.3500/= to import chemical fertilizer for 50 Kg and issue at Rs.350/= per 50 Kg incurring heavy losses as fertilizer subsidy. According to Sri Lanka Central Bank Report paddy cultivated area in 2007 is 816,000 hectares. Now it has been increased to 1,067,000 hectares. Approximately 750,000 MT of fertilizer is imported to Sri Lanka annually at cost over Rs.52 billion.
Organic farming will save fairly large amount of foreign exchange.
3. BETTER-TASTING FOOD
It’s not just imaginary: organic food actually can taste better than its conventionally farm-raised counterpart. One scientific reason for this is that some organic produce has lower nitrate contents than its non-organic version. This leads to sweeter-tasting fruits that also have been shown to contain higher levels of antioxidants. So it’s not really all in your head. Organic farming can lead to better flavor.
Organic farming help to provide natural taste food.
4. BETTER SOIL
A Cornell University study estimates that conventional farming’s dependency on chemical fertilizers destroys topsoil, which generates a $40 billion annual loss. If organic methods were used – instead of chemical fertilizers and ammonia – we would instead see an increase in the healthiness of this topsoil, which in turn would produce fruit and vegetables higher in minerals and micronutrients.
Organic farming will protect the environment
5. ASSISTING THE FIGHT AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE
Because organic farming eschews chemical fertilizers and pesticides, it reduces nonrenewable energy use. It takes considerable amounts of fossil fuel to create the synthetic fertilizers and pesticides used in conventional farming. What’s more, organic farming increases the amount of carbon returned to the soil, which in turn lessens the impact on the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Organic farming will provide solutions for climatic change
6. PRESERVATION OF THE CULTURE OF AGRICULTURE
It is said that every culture shares one thing in common: Food. It is a universal celebration. Organic farming celebrates healthfulness and biodiversity. It removes damaging chemical toxins from our environment and our food. That is something to promote and foster!
